What Is CBG?
CBG or Cannabigerol is known as the chemical mother of all other cannabinoids or the Stem cell Cannabinoid. It is produced naturally in both Hemp & marijuana plants in the form of cannabigerolic acid, but it is considered to be a minor cannabinoid due to the fact that it appears in very low levels in lab tests of mature cannabis plants.
The reason for this goes back to the same reason it is called both the mother and stem cell cannabinoid.
And that reason is that most CBG is immediately converted into one of the other major cannabinoids during photosynthesis.
According to Doctor Perry Solomon “CBG is the precursor to CBD, CBC, and THC, CBGA (the acidic, inactive form of CBG) changes, is broken down, and becomes the base molecule that other cannabinoids form from,”
So Basically, Dr. Solomon is saying that Cannabis plants produce cannabigerolic acid otherwise referred to as (CBGA), which is the precursor to the three main cannabinoid lines: tetrahydrocannabinolic acid (THCA), cannabidiolic acid (CBDA), and cannabichromenic acid (CBCA).
Specific enzymes in the plant break down the CBGA and move it toward one of the three lines. Then through photosynthesis they become the cannabinoids we know: THC and CBD. In most strains, CBGA is immediately converted to either THCA or CBDA which is then later converted to THC and CBD. Thus, in a mature marijuana or hemp plant, you won’t find much CBG hanging around.
To get higher quantities of CBG, breeders are experimenting with genetic manipulation and cross-breeding of plants. Hemptown USA, for instance, is currently developing a fully mature plant that has upwards of 10% CBG at full maturity while normal plants contain less than 2%.
Are there any benefits to CBG?
According to Axim Biotechnologies CEO, John Huemoeller “We know that CBG shows promise as an antibacterial agent and an anti-inflammatory,”
Now I was not able to find any clinical trials or studies that proved those specific benefits as of yet. However there are some promising Studies done by the National Center for Biotechnology Information on the Neuroprotective properties of cannabigerol in Huntington’s disease on mice, what was found through these trials was an improved antioxidant defenses, reduced neuroinflammation and seemed to be very active as a neuroprotectant.
According to Researchers CBG has great medical potential to help with a variety of ailments, of course we still need to wait for further studies to really know what
the full benefits of CBG can be.
Now even though we don’t have a ton studies in place yet, there are tons of people talking about what CBG has done for them, from helping with their PTSD to instantly removing migraines. Most of the reviews on various CBG products I looked at were quite positive with only a few stating that it did nothing for them. So I guess we will have to wait until further studies have been done to fully know, or you could just go buy some. I have heard fantastic things about Steves goods and will link them in the description below. No this video isn’t a sponsored by them but from what I have read they seem to be a good choice for your first time trying CBG.
So on to the final and most important question on your mind, What is the average price for CBG?
Unfortunately CBG is notoriously expensive to produce, in fact I have heard it referred to as “the Rolls Royce of cannabinoids.”
Now according to James Rowland, the CEO of Steves Goods
“It takes thousands of pounds of biomass to create small amounts of CBG isolate, That’s because most hemp only contains minute percentages of CBG, where as there are now hemp strains that contain 20% CBD in the crop. If the CBG content of the same crop is only 1%, that means you need to extract 20 times the amount of biomass to get the same amount of CBG out.”
According to Floyd Landis, Founder of Floyd’s of Leadville a CBD company based in Colorado “Either you give up your entire crop to process and produce pure CBG prior to the conversion into other cannabinoids, or you wait until it’s time to harvest the hemp plant, By that time most of the CBG has been converted into other cannabinoids so there’s very little left to extract.”
All this being said, from what I see most CBG oils range from $50 bucks to over $200 for varying potencies with prices only differing slightly between brands.
So if you’re interested in trying CBG and you don’t care if it may do nothing then definitely check it out, I did see you can get a ¼ gram of CBG isolate for like 20 bucks from Steves Goods and I also saw that hemptown use has a CBG Chewing gum for around the same price so check those out.
Awesome post! Keep up the great work! 🙂
